KIS is a residential school, preschool through twelve, located high in the western Ghats of South India in the state of Tamilnadu, first established by Christian missionaries more then century and half ago. It was the first school to offer the international Baccalaureate (IB) in India. I graduated from KIS in 1979 and taught high school mathematics and drawing in 1993. The school is going through a radical cultural and demographic transformation, once only one of two IB schools in India, it now has to compete with five or six new IB day schools, in major city. at a time when boarding schools are not popular for kids below grade ten. This masterplan looks at what the Ganga property could look like if the whole school from preschool through tenth grade were relocated here leaving the traditional Highclerc campus dedicated for IB diploma program 11&12 grades for which demand is greater then what the school can currently accept. We held design thinking workshops with staff, support staff, management, alumni and students to explore what is essential about KIS culture, and what must change for the school to remain viable in the years to come. The final 160 page document of mostly drawings and diagrams is divided into three sections: KIS in context, KIS today and KIS 2026.
